PATH’s laboratory is a custom-built 5080-square-foot multipurpose biosafety level 2 isolation facility wherein we conduct our in-house biotechnology work in point-of-care diagnostics and vaccine formulation—from research and development to bench assessment and quality assurance testing.
Ancillary areas include a dry room, plus cell culture and molecular biology facilities. The lab provides a suitable setting for carrying out all research and development phases relevant to immunochromatographic and enzyme-linked immunoassays, nucleic acid test optimization and the production of assay prototypes and the evaluation of diagnostic assays.
It also provides facilities for spray drying, lyophilization and the screening of specimens, handling and propagation of microorganisms, and work involving blood and other clinical specimens. Currently, more than 25 technology projects are being advanced in the laboratory.
The Product Development Shop
The 5,000-square-foot workshop is divided into machine shop, model shop, product testing bay, environmental testing lab, microscopy, photography and archival storage areas, a class 10,000 clean room/wet lab, and a usability and focus group study room.
Prototype design, fabrication, machining, and developmental and quality assurance testing are routinely conducted by technical staff in these areas. The shop houses approximately 12 active projects involving product evaluation, analysis, engineering, development, and fabrication. Shop staff also provide support to in-country design evaluations.
